[Great Hall of Rockwall] a question

While I was looking around on the net I found an SCA page, I forget where, but it was a meeting that corporate had where someone resigned their Laurel.  Why would someone resign their Laurel?  I thought once you became a Laurel, or a peer, you kept the title...kinda like a badge of honor.  Or am I wrong.
