Two days and counting 'til the Art Institute field trip! Here's the details,
as best as I can figure them. If you've got any questions or suggestions,
post them to list or call me on my cell 815-236-7906.

We'll be traveling to the Art Institute of Chicago
(www.artic.edu/aic/index.php).
111 South Michigan Ave.
Chicago, IL 60603-6404

We'll depart from the Mini Mead Hall (my apartment) on the 10:35 a.m. Metra
train. Let's try to meet up at the apartment at about 10 a.m. to give us a
cushion.

The Mini Mead Hall:
200 W. Brainard St.
Apt. 1
Harvard IL 60033

Directions from Wisconsin: Get to East bound Route 14 and head for Illinois.
The second town over the border is Harvard. Stay on 14 until you reach the
stoplight in the center of town. The intersecton, called 5-Points, is marked
by the town's cow statue, Harmilda. Bear right on Ayer Street. (literally,
bear right at the cow) Harvard's main drag. Turn right on Brainard St. The
apartment building is across Brainard from the post office. It is a red
brick building. There are a few parking spots around the building. If we run

out, Metra has a parking lot ($1 fee).

Lunch will be sack lunches on the train.

The Metra weekend pass is $5. Three children can ride free for each
fare-paying adult. We should arrive at the Ogilvie Transportation Center at
12:23 p.m. (www.metrarail.com)

Getting to the museum: I did a little math, and since the museum is only
about 2 miles from the train station, it may actually be cheaper to share a
couple of taxis over there. Most of the ways to use public transportation
for the trip involve transfers (pushing the cost to $4 a person one way) and

various amounts of walking. Splitting a cab between 3 or 4 people *should*
only cost $2 to $3 a person one way. If anyone desperately wants to explore
the CTA, I will be happy to act as sherpa, though. Don't know why anyone
would, though!

The Art Institute: suggested donation for admission is $12 a head.
"Suggested" being the operative word. Give what you can; required admission
fees don't start until June. That does not count extra admission fees to
special exhibits.

Hopefully, we will have about 4 hours to explore the museum (it closes at 5
p.m. Saturdays).

The popular opinion for dinner seems to be to eat at the restaurants at the
train station. If you've never been, the building the train station is
connected to is sort of like a small mall, complete with food court.

If we take the 6:30 p.m. train, we would be back in Harvard by 8:20 p.m., a
pretty sane hour for anyone who must make the drive back north.

That's how things stand now. Any ideas or suggestions?
