I just talked to Lorriedel...Daniel is looking and sounding much better
today. I heard him in the background grousing about something to his nurse.
More like his normal, rascally self. His temperature has started to go down,
and he has been taken off the heart monitor he was on. The doctors had him
hooked up to it because his blood pressure got extremely low when he was
admitted Wednesday morning...so low, they were shocked that he was still
awake. He is also back on some solid foods.
More info on how all of this happened:
Daniel wasn't feeling in top shape on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He had
some kind of flu/sinus/and or ear infection along with being worn out from a
long week. On Monday, he still wanted to grill something for the household
on Labor Day. While outside setting up the grill, he stepped on what looked
like a control knob from an appliance or machinery. Think of a smaller
version of the "male" end of a doorknob assembly. It's possible it was from
something a neighbor tried to throw in the Dumpster. We're not sure where it
came from. Because Daniel has little feeling in his foot, he didn't feel
that their was something under his right foot before he stepped down on it
with his full weight--driving the stick-like part of it through the sole of
his shoe and into his foot.
The wound was small, and wasn't bleeding a lot. I've seen Daniel bleed more
on other ocassions. We cleaned it out, dressed it with antibiotics and
wrapped it up. Lorriedel thought Daniel should have gone to the ER
immediately. I was leaning in favor of it. However, Daniel said he felt too
sick already to sit around in the ER waiting room for hours. He said that if
it was still bad in the morning he would go to the doctor. Feeling yucky
again, he went to bed and laid down.
I'm not sure if he went to the doc on Tuesday or not. But as the day went
on, he felt worse and worse. He didn't feel like eating, and what he did
eat, he couldn't get down. He woke up on Wednesday morning badly dehydrated
and with a high fever, and decided he needed help. Daniel had to concentrate
so hard on getting to a doctor that he forgot to wake up Lorriedel, leave a
note or call anyone.
He was admitted to the Monitored Care Unit at Northern Illinois Medical
Center in McHenry on Wednesday afternoon. I talked to him that evening, and
he still wasn't really coherent. By Wednesday night/Thursday morning, he was
diagnosed with blood poisoning from the wound, complicated by the virus that
was already in his system.
When I visited Thurday night, Daniel said he has never felt this sick...not
even when he was shot! But he was able to hold a conversation, joke and
criticise his night nurse, so I could see the improvement.
We still don't know how long they are going to keep him in the hospital.
Lorriedel hopes that once he is stabilized and the bacteria is on its way
out of his bloodstream he will be sent home to mend.
Daniel wants to hear from, see and talk to as many people as possible (keeps
his mind off his foot, I think). He has his cell phone, and you can call his
room in the hospital.
Daniel's cell: 815-814-0807
Lorriedel's cell: 815-814-0805
NIMC: 815-344-5000
At the prompt, punch in "2" for the bed number and "541" for the room
number. Or, stay on the line, and tell the operator you want Daniel Davis'
room.
I'll also be there. If you can't get through on the other numbers, try mine:
815-236-7906.
Now, some housekeeping...
We probably won't make it to the drum circle tomorrow.
The September issue of the Horn's Call is ready to go. I will send to the
list as a PDF, hopefully by Sunday. If anyone would like a print copy for
their records, or simply prefers to read stuff on paper than a computer
screen, e-mail me, and I will do a limited press run. Those copies will
either be mailed to you or handed out at the September business meeting,
depending on the number of requests.
Astridr: one of the books you ordered has arrived. I was going to give it to
you tomorrow. I'll e-mail you off-list and make arrangements for payment and
delivery.
Gretje: I know I need to send PDF of the HC to Shava and the kingdom
chronicler. Is there anyone else at kingdom that should get a copy?
Thanks for the good thoughts everyone!
Edda
