It is my sad duty to announce to the hall that Northshield and the SCA have lost one of their brightest lanterns.
Early in the morning on August 27, Master Solomon ben Jacob (MKA Sherwin Kader) of Maiden Mongolia died.
The funeral and burial took place on Tuesday (Jewish tradition holds that funerals usually happen very quickly after a death).
There are apparently plans afoot for a celebration of his life after Boar's Head to give him a proper SCA sendoff, especially for his friends in the Known World who were unable to travel to his funeral and wake.
There is also a storytelling contest in the works to honor one of Master Solomon's favorite pastimes.
While I shopped at the Maiden Mongolia booth many times, I did not have the pleasure of meeting Master Solomon. I am sad that I did not; he sounds like quite a soul.
Here's information gleaned from the kingdom list.

To the Hall, Greetings:
Old friends of Master Solomon ben Jacob would like to establish a
permanent memorial to him in the Barony of Caer Anterth Mawr.
First, we will have a Memorial Table set up near Troll at Boar's
Head, with lots of pictures, and a memorial book so people can write
their remembrances of Master Solomon.
Is anyone a bookbinder who could make such a book to honour him?
Next, Solly was renowned as a storyteller of a great variety of
tales: some were solemn stories with morals; some were scurrilous (but
likely true, according to him) lawyer jokes; some were bawdy; and some
were just downright silly. They were all a delight to hear.
We think an annual Master Solomon ben Jacob Storytelling Contest
would be a suitable way to honour him in perpetuity.
Mistress Prisilka, his wife, has decided to donate a pewter goblet
that was cherished by Master Solomon. This goblet will be engraved to
be a travelling trophy to be given to the winner of the annual Master
Solomon Storytelling Contest, which we would like to start after Boar's
Head, preferably at the Yule Moot, if the steward of that moot will give
permission. We think having 3 judges would be good. Baron Dughall has
volunteered to be one of them. We are asking Duke Corin and Mistress
Prisilka to be the others. All three judges have many years of
experience with Solly Stories and will be a good panel for the first
year's contest.
In future, there might be themes for the contest to be decided by
the Barony. If rules or a theme are established for this first contest,
they will be posted in the Hall. If you're thinking of entering,
remember that zany is good and puns always count.
We think this would be a fitting way to honour this beloved man who
had such influence in the creation of our Barony and who nurtured so
many of us in our skills and growth.

Unto Lady Gwynedd merch Megan o Fon and all the Guests in the Hall,
I could not have said it so well, I am to upset by this. Solly was one of my
oldest and dearest friends, in SCA and mundanely, he was also a Lodge
Brother, and my brother in the Scottish Rite. He was my counselor, my fan,
and my critic. I never knew a more positive man. His heart(s) and he, were
larger than life.
He joined the SCA after some friend, I don't know who, invited him to a
party at my home on Auer Avenue. What a man! Did you know that Solly fought
with Menachim Began for Israel's Independence?
And after that, he took a tour of Europe, and wound up in Scotland--really,
ya can't make this stuff up!--and found a pub run and populated by
MacCleods. Before the night was over, they adopted him into the clan with
full rights and privileges! Now, you don't do something like that to Shevy
Kader, but that he don't take it seriously!
He has been the Wisconsin Commissioner for Clan MacCleod for
I-don't-know-how-many-years! (I guess as long as Pete has been making "Loud
MacCleod" cakes and more. He was a clan representative to the MacCleod
parliament--this is a big deal--held every 4 years--in Skye.
When he created the B&V, it started a trend to create guilds! Myfanwy and I
chartered that first guild, and everything since has depended from that.
My friend, Sherwin Kader, Master Solomon ben Jacob, the Levite, you leave us
bereft of a friend, a companion, and a leader.
Farewell, old friend. We once had a conversation about the Deity. You said,
"He has a lot to answer for!" Ask the question, old friend, ask the
question!
Humbly,
Dughall Ailean mac'ic Lathura, Ist Baron CAM
Doug Stewart
Kader, Sherwin "Shevie" J.
August 27, 2007, age 72 years, of Shorewood. Beloved husband of Priscilla
"Pete" Kucik. Dear father of Dana (Alan) Robb, Rona (Gary) Wolfe, Judy
(Bruce) Brenner, and Jacob (Sarah) Kader. Further survived by numerous
adorable grandchildren: Jeffrey Burke; Anna Rose, David, Noah and Sadie
Wolfe; Chaya and Zahara Brenner; Sruly, Leah, Adina and Priva Kader; other
relatives and friends. Shevie was probably one of the world's longest living
heart transplant recipients. Growing up on Milwaukee's west side, he
attended Washington High School. In addition to being an outspoken advocate
for the State of Israel, Shevie served in the Israeli Border Guard. Around
the same time, he worked at several kibbutzim. In Milwaukee, Shevie worked
at A.O. Smith for nearly 20 years. In the 1970's he was a founding member of
Concerned Jewish Citizens in Milwaukee. Other affiliations included Clan
MacLeod, founding member of the Robert Burns Club, 32nd Degree Mason, and
Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval recreation group. Some of his
hobbies included teaching fencing, winemaking, and building model ships. He
loved to tell a good story with a moral and knew thousands of jokes.
Graveside services 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at Mound Zion
Cemetery, 14510 W. North Ave. Memorial contributions to Adina Kader
Scholarship Fund at Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study or American Friends
of Magen David Adom-ARMDI, 888 Seventh Avenue, Suite 403, New York, NY 10106
would be appreciated.
The family will observe shivah and receive friends at the Wolfe residence,
4051 N. Larkin St., Shorewood.
