[Great Hall of Rockwall] OT computer problem

I'm posting this because of the number of techie types here. Have y'all ever heard of this:

Last night after I went to bed, my sister was engaging in the banal online messaging that she enjoys. Suddenly, with no touching of any controls (she says), the image on the screen rotated 90 degrees to the left. And stayed that way. The computer seemed to be operating fine, the image on the screen was just up ended.

She shut the computer down, checked the cables (she says) and turned it back on. It took a longer than usual time to boot up Windows, and the image was still rotated. She fiddled with the controls. No change. The computer is not beeping or sending up any error messages.

Rather than handle this herself, she was kind enough to wake up at 5 am and tell me all about it.

We have an extra monitor, and she is supposed to be trying to connect that up and see if it works OK. Right now, it seems like it is a problem with the aging monitor (about 10 years old) or the video card.

Any ideas, lords and ladies? I wouldn't be surprised if the computer is fried (Murphy's law and all).

The increasingly frazzled,
Kelli
